Using Our Skills for Good: Cafeteria Culture’s New Website & How UpClear Helped

At UpClear, one of our core values is responsibility- to our clients, to each other, and to the world we live in. Demonstrating our commitment to this, UpClear has been a member of 1% for the Planet since 2022, with a focus on supporting environmental and social challenges around the globe. Specifically, we support causes that promote environmental impact, empower youth, and operate in the communities where our team members live and work.

One such cause is Cafeteria Culture (CafCu), a New York City-based nonprofit that combines environmental education with youth leadership. Their mission is to eliminate plastic waste, reduce pollution, and inspire students to become climate advocates through hands-on learning and public policy engagement.

In 2024, the Cafeteria Culture team communicated the need for an upgrade to their website during a meeting with members of the UpClear team. Funding was needed to complete the project.

With extensive website development experience and great agency partner, the UpClear team sensed an opportunity to support Cafeteria Culture in a bigger way than just a monetary donation.

UpClear funded the project, facilitated an introduction to our digital agency, e9 digital, and served as a consultant during the development process.  Together, the Cafeteria Culture, e9, and UpClear teams collaborated closely to:

  • Develop a new visual identity and refresh branding
  • Restructure content to make the site more intuitive and user-friendly
  • Improve site navigation to enhance the user experience
  • Increase visibility of CafCu’s mission and programs for students, educators, and policymakers

After months of collaboration, the result was a dramatically improved online presence that better reflects Cafeteria Culture’s important work and helps them reach a wider audience. Rhonda Keyser, Cafteteria Culture’s Program and Policy Director says,

“It’s been such a pleasure to go through the website and see what we do through other people’s eyes and see it be sort of recontextualized and not dramatically different, but just really offering the information that we have to share in such a beautiful, clear way.”

On the UpClear side, Olivia Perez, Sr. Marketing Associate, had this to say about the project,

“Working with Cafeteria Culture on this project was a deeply rewarding experience. Our teams collaborated closely to bring their mission to life- digitally streamlining navigation, updating design, and ensuring their incredible work empowering youth and driving environmental change would shine through every page.”

Finally, the website was redeveloped by Jason Solak and Jordan Harriger of e9digitial, a New York City-based digital agency. Jordan is the Assoicate Creative Director of the company:

“I enjoyed the challenge of redesigning the Cafeteria Culture website. It was critical we maintained the wealth of information they’ve gathered and produced over the years. My focus was on creating a modern experience that made all that content easy to find, while also building out WordPress specifically for their future needs. Working Atsuko and her team and seeing the project all come together was great!”

UpClear is proud be part of the 1% for the Planet initiative and support Cafeteria Culture as they educate and empower the next generation of environmental leaders. We urge you to support Cafeteria Culture or the organizations that are meaningful to you!
