Causes We Support: Central Park Conservancy

As a 1% for the Planet member, we’re proud to support the Central Park Conservancy— the private nonprofit entrusted by New York City with the complete day-to-day care of Central Park. With the majority of our team based out of our New York City office, this one hits close to home.

Central Park is woven into the fabric of the city as a cherished public landmark and cornerstone of community life for New Yorkers and visitors alike. Despite being open and free to all, the Park is funded almost entirely by private donations, which cover roughly 85% of its annual maintenance costs.

The Conservancy manages every aspect of its upkeep across 843 acres, including horticulture, tree and turf care, restoration, stonework, playgrounds, water bodies, and visitor services.

Their work extends well beyond the Park’s perimeter, too. Through the Five Borough Program, the Conservancy shares its expertise with parks across New York City and beyond. It contributes to more than $1 billion in annual economic activity and supports 5,000 local jobs.

Beyond providing nature access to one of the world’s most vibrant cities, the Conservancy’s work also delivers measurable environmental impact. The Park’s 18,000+ trees offset 325 metric tons of carbon annually and filter 7 tons of air pollutants.

The Conservancy has made significant operational strides as well. To date, it transitioned to a 90% electric fleet and increased recycling rates by 97%. They’ve also partnered with Yale School of the Environment on the Central Park Climate Lab, a research initiative studying how urban parks can help cities adapt to and mitigate climate change.

We’re proud to play a small part in supporting that work.

About the Central Park Conservancy

The Central Park Conservancy is a private nonprofit born out of community activism in the 1980s. Over four decades later, it’s transformed into a model for urban park stewardship worldwide. It’s continued to push that work forward through sustainability research, operational innovation, and partnerships with parks across New York City and beyond.
